At A Glance

Runnels is an independent, non-sectarian, coeducational, nonprofit institution whose purpose is to provide a college preparatory program of studies to students from age 2 through grade 12. 

Runnels enrolls approximately 650 students in preschool through high school on two campuses. The student body represents neighborhoods in the city and many surrounding areas.

State Approved

Runnels School – its faculty, administration and curriculum in all its programs – is approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Class size varies but is normally limited to 18 students.

Arts Education  

The arts are an essential component of the Runnels curriculum. Students have many opportunities to grow their appreciation of the arts while advancing their own creativity and sharing it with others through concerts, plays, art exhibits and competitions.

Raider Athletics

In addition to regular P.E. and Health classes, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports at the elementary and junior and senior high levels. Students participate in 11 varsity sports plus junior and senior high cheerleading.


Runnels School is departmentalized in all grades, so teachers instruct mainly in their particular areas of professional expertise. There are approximately 140 faculty and staff members.

Student Life

Runnels offers participation in a variety of campus clubs and organizations, including National Honor Society, Beta and the Junior Classical League. Members of clubs and organizations represent Runnels at a wide array of state and local club conventions and competitions.  Five major theatrical performances in addition to a variety of concerts and performances by band, strings, harp, and dance students are produced and staged in the 500-seat Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre throughout each school year. Elementary drama students also present a vast range of plays in the Drama Room. In the spring, the Festival of Arts features concerts by the band, strings, and harp programs, and the art department mounts a school-wide juried art show exhibiting more than 2,000 pieces of original student artwork. 

College Placement

Runnels has a vigorous college placement program under the direction of Jr./Sr. High Assistant Principal for Student Services Dana Schlotterer ( Runnels students are routinely accepted at select colleges and universities across the nation. Visit College Corner for more details.

Runnels Class of 2019

  • Almost the entire class qualified for TOPS scholarships, with 66% earning higher level TOPS awards;
  • Were accepted at 47 different colleges and universities – both in and out of state;
  • Received more than $6 million in scholarship awards (not including TOPS);
  • Earned an average composite ACT score of 26 (surpassing both state and national averages). 

Smart Tuition

Runnels uses Smart Tuition to process and collect tuition payments. Smart Tuition also handles billing for School Services such as milk, bus service, field trips, yearbooks and special events.

“No-Nut Policy”

Runnels Elementary and Preschool, and Jr./Sr. High classrooms that are shared with younger children are “Nut Free.” In these areas, foods containing any type of nut, peanut butter, peanut oil, or food that has been processed in a facility where nuts are processed are not permitted.
